University of Wisconsin Microbial Sciences Building

330,000 SF facility providing the ultimate in flexibility for both research and instructional laboratories. Twenty-one (21) independent air handling systems provide heating, cooling, building pressurization, and ventilation control for the high-tech facility. Air systems include three 100% redundant critical laboratory units, four instructional laboratory units, two atrium air handling units, four stairwell pressurization systems and 3 smoke purge systems. Over 1000 VAV boxes and exhaust valves provide variable airflow to address the continuously changing conditions and environmental requirements. Eighteen different heat recovery coils were used to control the energy consumption of the building. Chilled water and high pressure steam from the campus power plants provided the utilities necessary for the HVAC system.
